Empty Halls

Yesterday night I visited a friend in the hospital…

An emergency room with cops and a man who had somehow drawn their attention…

Cut off in line waiting for a visitor badge by a man obviously anxious to see his wife…

No hard feelings…

An elderly woman in a bathroom in obvious pain…

A young couple with overnight bags, checking in for an early morning induction…

A security guard struggling to get me clearance…

A page over the walkie-talkies – “does anyone want to go home?”

Laughter…

A mother and son with worry lines drawn tight across her face…

Pain and hope…

Clearance… a pass… a door buzz…

Silent hallways…

Rooms full of people but no noise…

Beep, beep, beep…

Life hangs in the balance…

And yet today I get really angry with the Comcast representation…

The challenge to be true to whom we are called to be.
